Self-drive in summer

Period from June 20 to August 19

If you are going to explore the country by driving yourself, we can provide the vehicle and the best accommodations around the country and in the interior and, of course, our expert advice.

  • Choice between different categories of passenger vehicles or 4×4 jeeps.
  • Choice between several categories of accommodation ranging from the most rustic to the most comfortable (We recommend mixing these different categories in order to achieve the ideal itinerary)

To establish a tailor-made program and a detailed estimate, we will first need to talk about your itinerary, your wishes and what is achievable.

Before we give you a quote, depending on the length of your vacation, your number and your budget, you can start by looking at the following indicative packages:

Only 4wd vehicles can venture onto the trails of the interior desert highlands. Passenger vehicles are not allowed there, but allow you to make a full or partial tour, to go deeper into inhabited and uninhabited countryside and bypass grandiose fjords and imposing peninsulas, to approach glaciers and cross large volcanic regions

For years we have been organizing self-drives for our hiker friends who wish to extend their trek with an individual discovery of Iceland. But we also offer them today on a drop-on-demand basis and only to open-minded travelers. We don’t have “serial products” and ready-made itineraries, as the big agencies suggest. Of course, what you want is realistic and achievable and that you accept our advice and expertise. So that we can offer you such a turnkey card trip, it is necessary to understand each other well and to exchange by email but also on the phone with if possible a map of Iceland unfolded in front of you.

All the routes around the country that we offer in the Off-season self-drive tours are of course feasible during the summer, but know that you will not be the only ones on the road. Some spots are invaded, especially along the South Coast, or Lake Myvatn, and we are not talking about the Golden Circle (Thingvellir-Geysir-Gullfoss) where we speak Mandarin more than other languages.

In winter the desert highlands of the interior (90% of the surface of the country) are under snow and in spring even if the ground appears again, the thaw, the snowfields, the floods, and the slush do not allow no traffic.

Tracks in the interior are allowed for traffic only in summer and early autumn and only for 4wd vehicles. They open little by little, one after the other during the month of June and naturally close towards, say, the end of September.

Exploring the interior of the highlands by jeep remains an extraordinary adventure. Off road is strictly prohibited for reasons of nature protection and rangers and guards ensure that this is respected. But the tracks themselves are often very pleasant and sporty. They meander through incredible and extremely varied landscapes unlike any other. Rivers are fords and it is recommended not to do anything, to trust advice and also your instinct. There are guarded huts but places are limited and on the outskirts, on the edge of the inhabited lands, a few rare hotels and inns that should be reserved months in advance. Of course if you stay a long time you will also have to take circular route N ° 1 on which you will no longer be alone in the world, but this one remains splendid, despite the crowds on certain spots that have become too famous.
