Trekking

Why choose us ?

Here at Fjallabak, we sincerely consider trekking as a magnificent human experience in the wilderness before being a business. We keep a reasonable size for our family business despite fierce rivalry imposed by big tour operators and mass tourism that invaded areas with easy access.

Fortunately Iceland is vast and everyone rushes to the same places. We venture further into the back country.

Icelandic Highland Travel founded in 1976 became Fjallabak in 1997. Said without bragging, this is the oldest and most experienced trekking company in Iceland. Thousands of miles stored in our muscles, mind, heart and experience.  Meet our team here.

Its founder, in addition to exploring the nearly pristine mountains of Iceland, formerly led many treks and expeditions to the Sahara, East Africa and the Himalayas.

Fjallabak’s challenging treks that we mostly operate in the southern volcanic highlands can be considered one of the most beautiful, remote treks in the world. The hidden part of the Öræfi desert is a collection of strange and majestic landscapes from the great volcanic rift that splits Iceland in two.

Where we walk, there are few tracks – few signs, if any, of man’s existence. This is one of the few places in this world where the silence is complete. A true wilderness that will leave you spellbound with natural wonders at every turn.

Our exclusive treks are limited to 12 participants and are exceptional in their design and quality. Trek to the Doors of Hell, Trek Around Mount Hekla or Trek Langisjór are by far our favorites. There are not marked, unfrequented, yet they traverse landscapes are among the strangest that can be found on our planet.

Laugavegur Trail

The marked path from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmörk known as the Laugavegur Trail is on of the most famous trail in Iceland. Becoming too famous, overcrowded accommodation infrastructure is not keeping up and shelter prices have hit record highs. Laugavegur remains a very beautiful adventure for independent backpackers. We think that this path should be essentially dedicated to them. Alas gregarious organizations also offer it for groups and it's way too crowded !

However, in September, as the season draws to a close and the fall colors explode under the blazing sun, as the Northern Lights dance in the night, we will re-propose our own Laugavegur variant, assisted hut to hut, in 6 days instead of 3 days with crooked paths and loops to explore the wonders that lie around.
